Anderson-McCallum rivalry football game gets a new name, sponsor
AUSTIN (KXAN) — The season-opening rivalry football game between Anderson and McCallum is a little less spicy now.
Legacy Turf and Greens is taking over sponsorship of the annual House Park matchup, ending the 23-year run of the Taco Shack Bowl and sponsorship by the Austin Tex-Mex restaurant. The game, set for 7:30 p.m., Aug. 28, will now be called the Shoal Creek Showdown.
Eddie Joseph, founder and owner of Legacy Turf and Greens, graduated from Anderson in 1995 and his two sons played for the Trojans. He said being able to sponsor the game is something he wouldn't have believed he'd get to do 10 years ago.
"We believe in giving back to the Austin community that shaped us," he said in a press release. "It's about legacy, pride and helping the next generation of athletes shine under the lights."
Like previous years, each school will have a pregame "spirit competition" pep rally with each school's booster club announcing details soon, the press release said.
Anderson won the game last season in a 57-40 shootout for its third consecutive rivalry victory. Trojans quarterback Max Gerlich, now with the UTSA Roadrunners, threw seven touchdown passes, and receiver Ed Small (TCU) had three touchdowns.
The game will be broadcast on KBVO.
