Top Red Sox Prospect Receives Recognition Amid Power Tear
Jhostynxon Garcia continues to swing a scorching bat in the minor leagues.
The Boston Red Sox prospect is now hitting .305/.375/.587 in Triple-A Worcester amid a sizzling start to August. Garcia, often called “The Password” because of his uniquely spelled first name, has homered in each of his last three games and went yard four times last week.
In light of those results, Garcia was named the International League’s Player of the Week on Monday.
Garcia went 10-for-29 with four doubles and 13 RBIs over his last six games. The outfielder has registered a hit in 16 of his last 18 games.
The Password’s stock continues to climb during an eye-raising campaign. He moved into MLB’s top 100 as the No. 88 prospect, ranking second in Boston’s farm system behind shortstop Franklin Arias after Kristian Campbell, Marcelo Mayer and Roman Anthony graduated from prospect eligibility.
Including his 33 games at Double-A, Garcia is batting .288/.368/.518 with 18 home runs this season. Among the eight International League hitters with a higher OPS, only top catching prospect Samuel Basallo is younger.
Under different circumstances, fans may be counting down the days until Garcia reaches the big leagues. However, a crowded outfield blocks his path to receiving meaningful playing time in Boston.
The right-handed Garcia could conceivably give Alex Cora another platoon option for the left-handed Jarren Duran, Roman Anthony and Wilyer Abreu, but the rising young slugger will likely stay in the minors for the foreseeable future.
