Dundee u17s 0 Queen’s Park U17s 0 – Stalemate to start

QUEEN’S PARK under-17s followed the under-19s’ path to Dundee last week – but couldn’t match their result on Tayside.

Charley King’s side won 2-1 in the City of Discovery on Tuesday in the CAS Under-19 Advanced Youth League, so Lee Mitchell’s squad had high hopes heading east three days later on Friday.

The young Spiders were met with another tough game to kick off their campaign proper, though this time neither side could make a break-through.

Queen’s Park edged the first half possession but couldn’t find a way through the Dark Blues’ defence and it was goalless at the break.

That’s how it ended too despite Dundee pushing further up the pitch in the second half – but Mitchell’s side still looked the likelier to score.

The Spiders stuck to their task to keep the clean sheet, ensuring a point was the minimum they’d bring back to Glasgow – and they could even have won it with some positive play as the game wore on.

Coach Lee Mitchell said: “This was a very well organised Dundee team and in the first half, I felt we had real control – Dundee didn’t really press us.

“In that situation it’s up to us to go and create and if I’m honest, I didn’t think we had enough creativity in the final third to really threaten Dundee.

“They looked to be slightly more aggressive in their press in the second half, but once we got used to that, we gained control again and created better opportunities.

“I’m disappointed we didn’t manage to get the goal I think we deserved, especially for the last 15 minutes when I felt we were well on top and deserved it.

“Overall, I think we defended well against a team that played pretty direct. It would have been easy to switch off and find ourselves behind, even to one long ball, but the boys showed good concentration to deal with any threats.

“Overall, it was a good performance against a very well organised team.”

Next up for the under-17s is Dunfermline at Lochinch on Tuesday night.

QUEEN’S PARK: Stiven, Kerr, Divers, Smith, Afzal, Lafferty, Breeds, Cunningham, Moore, Duffy, Edzie.
