Potential Red Sox Free Agent Target Hits Milestone Home Run

Boston Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow passed on adding a power-hitting first baseman before the July 31 MLB trade deadline. But perhaps it will be a different story when free agency begins following the 2025 World Series.

One of the biggest bats on the market will be New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso. The Red Sox repeatedly have been linked to the 30-year-old slugger, particularly after Triston Casas suffered a season-ending knee injury in May.

On Saturday, Alonso hit his 250th career home run, a 428-foot blast in the Mets’ 12-6 win over the San Francisco Giants. He stands second all-time on the Mets home run list, trailing only Darryl Strawberry, who hit 252 homers while calling Shea Stadium home.

“It felt really special,” Alonso said Saturday, per NJ.com. “I’m just really happy to help the team right there, especially in the first inning. I thought it set the tone really well.”

“He’s had such an amazing career here with so many more milestones ahead,” teammate Brandon Nimmo added, according to SNY. “I’m so happy for him to reach that mark, and he did it in typical Pete fashion with a no-doubter in a big moment for us.”

“I feel like I’m in a really good place right now,” Alonso said, per SNY. “I honestly feel like I’ve been in a good place, I just want to keep taking good swings on good pitches and capitalize on my opportunities to help the team win.”

The Mets (63-49) are in second place in the National League East, a half-game behind the first-place Philadelphia Phillies. New York currently sits in second place in the NL Wild Card standings.

Alonso, a five-time All-Star and two-time Home Run Derby champion, is expected to opt out of his two-year, $54 million contract this fall.
