Ruben Amorim breaks silence on young star Alejandro Garnacho’s Manchester United future

Sideline from the preseason squad, coach Ruben Amorim broke the silence and addressed Alejandro Garnacho's future at Manchester United.

Ruben Amorim has been leading a rebuilding effort at Manchester United, and Alejandro Garnacho has emerged as one of the notable absentees from the club’s preseason tour. With less than a month remaining in the summer transfer window, the Portuguese manager has finally broken his silence on Garnacho’s future at Old Trafford.

Since Amorim’s appointment last November, one of the key questions has been how a player like Garnacho would fit into the manager’s tactical system. Though the Argentine winger showed flashes of brilliance and earned his spot at times, his candid remarks following the Europa League final—where he came off the bench—cast doubt on his long-term role at the club.

Currently speaking from United’s preseason tour in the United States, Amorim addressed the situation directly in an interview with ESPN: “I think Garnacho, you can understand and you can see, he’s talented. He’s a really talented boy. And sometimes things don’t work out. You cannot explain specifically what it is. I think it’s clear that Garnacho wants a different thing with a different leadership. And I can understand that. So I think it’s not a problem.”

Amorim went on to clarify that there is no personal conflict, just a divergence in vision. “Sometimes you adapt to one guy, you have the connection. Other times, you want a new challenge. So, we try to make everything OK to all the parts; to the club, to the coach and to the players. So, it’s a natural thing in football,” he concluded.

No formal offers have been submitted for Garnacho, but transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that Chelsea have made him a priority target. The Argentine is believed to favor staying in the Premier League, and the Blues’ interest reportedly aligns with his ambitions to remain with a top-tier club.

Fueling the speculation, Garnacho liked an Instagram post from Romano that referenced Chelsea’s pursuit—widely interpreted as a public signal of his interest in making the move. While United have yet to receive a bid, Chelsea are expected to step up their efforts in August.

Manchester United still expecting more departures

Garnacho isn’t the only player facing an uncertain future at Old Trafford. Wingers Antony and Jadon Sancho, along with left-back Tyrell Malacia, are among several former big-money signings who have been left out of the preseason squad. All three are training separately as United continue to seek solutions for their exits.

When asked about their status, Amorim was candid: “We just need to follow the markets. There are players that clearly show that they don’t want to be here and that is normal. We will try to use this space to prepare the team that I think is going to be here.”

Still, the door isn’t completely closed. Amorim left open the possibility of reintegration, depending on how the window plays out. “If the market closes and then they are Manchester United players, we as a club have to treat them in the same conditions. But in this moment I’m just working with the players that I think is going to stay and the other guys are trying to find a solution for their careers,” Amorim added.
