GOAT debate must go on: Lionel Messi to take a page from Cristiano Ronaldo’s playbook with major Inter Miami contract twist
As speculation continues to swirl about the future of soccer’s most iconic figures, Lionel Messi has made a massive decision that could redefine the trajectory of his career and further cement his influence on Major League Soccer.
While comparisons between Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have spanned over a decade, their paths diverged significantly after their European peaks. Now, the Argentine maestro seems poised to follow in his rival’s footsteps in one specific way: extending his career well into his 40s.
According to Catalunya Radio and journalist Xavi Campos, the Argentine is “on the verge of closing a renewal agreement” that will see him stay with Inter Miami until 2028. “The Argentine GOAT will see his current deal expire at the end of the 2025 MLS campaign,” the reports stated.
Although the original contract included a 12-month extension clause that would take the veteran through the 2026 World Cup, the new terms are even more ambitious. If fully honored, this extension would carry Messi through his 41st birthday, marking him as one of the oldest active players in top-level soccer. Notably, the deal is said to include flexibility clauses: either Messi or the club can opt to terminate the contract earlier in 2026 or 2027, depending on future circumstances.
Inter Miami’s crown jewel
Since arriving in South Florida in 2023, Messi’s impact has been nothing short of transformational. The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner has scored 58 goals and provided 28 assists in 69 appearances for the Herons, revitalizing the club’s performances and global image.
Under his leadership, Inter Miami secured major trophies, including the Leagues Cup and the Supporters’ Shield, milestones previously thought out of reach for a franchise that was once among the MLS’s bottom dwellers.
His influence stretches beyond the pitch. Ticket sales, broadcast rights, and global fan engagement have skyrocketed. Messi’s appeal has turned Inter Miami into a destination brand—and with the opening of Miami Freedom Park set for 2026, his presence is pivotal in solidifying the club’s long-term stature.
The Cristiano Ronaldo parallels
Messi’s decision is inevitably drawing comparisons to Cristiano Ronaldo, who at 40 is still scoring prolifically for Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia. Both legends are now ambassadors of soccer’s global growth, opting to extend their careers outside of Europe’s top five leagues.
While Ronaldo has embraced the Middle East’s booming soccer market, Messi’s choice to stay in the United States emphasizes his commitment not just to his club, but to helping elevate American soccer’s global reputation.
