Man Utd boost as Laurie Whitwell shares how they can sign Sesko before selling players
Manchester United could agree a deal to sign RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko before selling players, so long as it happens before next year’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules deadline, according to The Athletic journalist Laurie Whitwell.
The Red Devils are now prioritising the Slovenian international if they sign a striker this summer, but they have spent around £130 million so far recruiting the services of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.
Adding Sesko to their attack could cost Man United around an initial £65m, with the Bundesliga club demanding that plus add-ons and a sell-on percentage for any deal.
It could force the Red Devils to sell some of their unwanted stars, and while under-fire striker Rasmus Hojlund has been touted for a potential departure, it is not impossible that the Old Trafford club can raise the finances for Sesko without the Dane leaving.
Significant fees could yet be recouped on Alejandro Garnacho and Antony, with both likely to fetch Man United almost £70m.
Next year’s PSR deadline is June 30th, and the Red Devils would have completed enough sales before then to ensure they remain within the confines of the financial rules.
It is a huge boost for Man United as head coach Ruben Amorim could do with the services of the Leipzig star in front of goal next season and going forward.
The Portuguese was keen on a reunion with former Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres, but the Sweden international striker has joined Arsenal and the Red Devils have moved on.
Aston Villa veteran Ollie Watkins was identified as an option too, but Sesko will be a long-term solution as he is 22 and there is the opportunity of a resale value on him given his huge potential.
Such a signing could make all the difference for United next season as Arsenal were convinced that he is good enough to help them win the Premier League title.
The Gunners opted for Gyokeres in the end after the finances needed to sign Sesko dissuaded them, but the Red Devils could be ready to go all the way as they look to reclaim their status as one of the biggest and best teams in the land and Europe.
