Yankees Emerging As Team To Watch For Sandy Alcantara

With the clock ticking down to Major League Baseball’s trade deadline this evening, the Boston Red Sox have so far remained quiet after acquiring left-handed reliever Steven Matz in a deal with the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday.

While there’s still plenty of time to get a deal done, the Red Sox are reportedly facing serious competition from rival clubs trying to acquire Miami Marlins right-handed starting pitchers Sandy Alcantara and Edward Cabrera.

USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported on social media early on Wednesday that the Houston Astros were in trade discussions with Miami to acquire Alcantara after failing to reach a deal with the San Diego Padres for Dylan Cease. While those discussions could be revisited, Sean McAdam of MassLive has previously reported that the Red Sox and Marlins haven’t spoken in over a week.

That said, MLB Network‘s Jon Morosi revealed on social media that the New York Yankees are a team to watch regarding a deal for Alcantara or Cabrera. The only hangup appears to be the hefty demands Miami has set for a prospect return for the team’s two highly coveted pitchers.

“Sources: The Marlins and Yankees have had dialogue about either Sandy Alcántara or Edward Cabrera going to the Bronx,” said Morosi. “The Marlins have asked for Spencer Jones (1.115 OPS in the minors this season) as different concepts have been discussed.”

With the Yankees unwilling to part with their top outfield prospect, it remains unclear if the Marlins will accept a package that doesn’t involve Spencer Jones. With Miami holding all the cards, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has a big decision to make if he wants to improve his injury-prone starting rotation by the end of the day.
