Shane Tamura’s High School Football Coach Questions ‘Could I Have Helped The Kid?'

0 22

New York City experienced another tragedy after Shane Tamura opened fire in Manhattan, killing four as well as himself, police say.

Tamura, 27, of Las Vegas, felt he was experiencing the impacts of CTE, or chronic traumatic encephalopathy, according to notes he left before the shooting.

New York Mayor Eric Adams told CBS the notes hint at the idea that Tamura blamed the NFL for downplaying the impacts of CTE, a brain disease linked to repeated head injuries, common in impact sports.

"Study my brain please. I'm sorry," one of the notes said, according to ABC 7.

The likely reason Tamura picked the skyscraper at 345 Park Ave. was because it held the NFL's headquarters, Tamura's target, Adams said.

Tamura also shot and severely wounded NFL employee Craig Clementi, who was reportedly hit by a ricochet, according to The Athletic. He's currently in stable condition.

Tamura never played for the NFL though.

He did play high school football in Los Angeles, though.

Tamura's head coach at Granada Hills Charter School, Walter Roby, during his senior year told Fox 11 News, "he was a quiet hard worker."

"He was coachable," he added. "So whatever we asked him to do, he was doing it. He led by his actions on the field. My heart is still aching in prayer with god, just to the victims and to Shane himself."

Asked what was going through his mind, Roby said: "A lot."

"Could I have done more? Could I have helped the kid? Could I have reached out to him, or he had reached out to me? It's just a lot to process right now," he added.

The shooting took place on July 28, 2025 in the evening. Gunfire broke out in the lobby of the building in Midtown before Tamura allegedly hopped on an elevator, intending to get to the NFL's offices, and ended up on the 33rd floor where another victim was shot and killed.
