Midweek preview: Season starts with Thornbury test

Royal Wootton Bassett Town get their 2025-26 Hellenic League Premier Division campaign started on Tuesday evening when they visit Thornbury Town (7.45pm kick off). Jonny Aitkenhead's side will be looking to continue Bassett's excellent record away at Thornbury with five visits to the Mundy Playing Fields yielding five wins. Thornbury, who are coming off a 12th place finish - their highest placing so far across four seasons in the Hellenic Premier - have been more competitive against Bassett during the last two seasons though. They drew on their visit to Wiltshire in 2023-24 and won against Bassett for the first time last season, triumphing 2-1 at the Gerard Buxton Sports Ground in March. With Thornbury aiming to break into the top half in 2025-26, it's set to be an intriguing opening test for the new look Bassett team.
