Robert Lewandowski provides key update on Barcelona future amid final year of contract

Entering his last year of contract in the 2025-26 season, star striker Robert Lewandowski made a key update on his future at FC Barcelona.

Robert Lewandowski has become a beloved figure among FC Barcelona fans thanks to his consistent, high-level performances since joining the club. Now entering the final year of his contract for the 2025–26 season, the veteran striker has offered an important update on where his future may lie.

After leaving Bayern Munich in 2022, Lewandowski made a bold move to La Liga following more than a decade in the Bundesliga. Signing a four-year deal at age 32, the Polish star has managed to maintain his status as one of Europe’s top strikers — even now, at 36 years old.

Speaking from Barcelona’s preseason tour in Japan, Lewandowski addressed his contract status following a training session on Saturday: “I don’t know if this will be my last year under contract. I’m at peace. Right now, what happens at the end of the season isn’t important — what matters is what happens this season and what I can contribute.

I’m calm; what matters is what I have in my heart and in my mind. But first, we have to see how this season goes,” Lewandowski added, leaving the door open for either an exit or an extension with the Catalan side. With just one year remaining on his current deal, he appears focused on helping the club achieve its goals.

I think for us, and for me, the most important thing is where we want to go and how many trophies we want to win. Of course, my goals are important — both for me and for the team — but I can help not just with goals, but also with my overall performance. I believe we can play better, and with more experience. We had a period where we didn’t play perfectly. We had a young team. But I think we can play better than we did last season.”

In the 2024–25 campaign, Lewandowski scored an impressive 42 goals in 52 appearances, placing himself among the Champions League’s top scorers and in contention for the European Golden Boot. With his 37th birthday approaching in August, his performance this season could determine whether he earns a contract extension with Barcelona.

Champions League: Barcelona’s top priority

Last season, Barcelona played some of their most compelling soccer in recent years but ultimately fell short in the Champions League, losing to Inter Milan in the semifinals. Under head coach Hansi Flick and with a more experienced squad, Lewandowski discussed what it will take to finally get over the hump.

There are many factors in the Champions League, like injuries… we have titles in our sights. The road is very long, and we need to focus on the next match, not the final,” the striker stated. “We are the team to beat, and what we need to do is be better on the pitch. We know what direction we want to take,” he concluded.
