Celtics Writer Smells Another Move Coming ‘Relatively Soon’

Are the Boston Celtics on the verge of another roster addition?

Boston waived reigning G League MVP JD Davison on Thursday, which surprised some Celtics observers, including CLNS Media’s Bobby Manning.

“Surprised this happened so early before camp,” Manning wrote, before noting that another move might be on the way.

“Of course, Ben Simmons interest has been reported, Charles Bassey showed out at Summer League and the #Celtics had filled 20/21 offseason roster spots,” Manning continued. “I’d be surprised if something doesn’t follow relatively soon.”

Boston’s interest in Simmons was reported earlier in the week. Additional teams, including the New York Knicks, are said to be monitoring the former No. 1 overall pick.

Are the Celtics making room for Simmons or Bassey, or is president of basketball operations Brad Stevens just establishing more roster flexibility? The plausibility of adding Bassey to the roster remains unknown, although an unnamed Celtics executive recently told Spotrac’s Keith Smith the team would “love to keep working” with Bassey.

With Davison now released, the Celtics have an open roster spot. The most glaring depth chart need remains at center. Stevens made no indication during his recent press appearances that Boston is eager to add.

Newly acquired veterans Anfernee Simons and Georges Niang remain possible trade chips, as does Sam Hauser. Notably, neither Simons nor Niang can be traded with other players until September 7.
