Man Utd's stance on signing Alexander Isak as striker eyes transfer from Newcastle
Manchester United are unlikely to spend big on a marquee striker during the backend of the transfer window, according to Daily Mail journalist Chris Wheeler.
The Red Devils have had a good summer thus far, and they have already made a significant outlay on two high-profile signings in Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.
United have spent more than £130 million on the attacking duo, and Wheeler claims that the club have now ruled out a move for unsettled Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak.
They are also unlikely to pursue other expensive options such as Benjamin Sesko and Nicolas Jackson.
Man Utd still need to focus on signing a proven Premier League striker
The club have bolstered their forward ranks with Cunha and Mbeumo, who registered a combined tally of 35 goals and 14 assists in the English top flight last season.
The duo have proven their credentials in the Premier League and should provide a significant attacking upgrade for the club next term.
Alongside the pair, United should focus on signing a striker with a similar track record. Isak would be a dream signing, but the club are unlikely to afford his services.
Newcastle could demand a hefty £150m, which is well beyond United’s reach. Similarly, Chelsea want a staggering £100m to part ways with Nicolas Jackson this summer.
Benjamin Sesko could be available for a much lesser sum. Fabrizio Romano has claimed today that he could be signed from RB Leipzig for £61-70m plus £9m in add-ons.
The Slovenian has immense potential but may need time to adapt to the intensity of the Premier League. United can’t afford to gamble on another emerging centre-forward.
The right thing would be to sign an experienced Premier League striker for a reasonable price.
Crystal Palace’s Jean-Philippe Mateta could be a good solution. He has netted 27 Premier League goals since Oliver Glasner took charge of the London side in February last year.
Only Isak, Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah have scored more during this period. His displays have gone under the radar. The Frenchman deserves a big-club transfer.
With less than two years left on his contract, United could sign him for £40m.
