David Ornstein: Man Utd will only advance to sign striker who bagged 39 league goals last term on one condition

Manchester United enquired to Sporting Lisbon about Viktor Gyokeres last week, but the striker has made clear he is interested only in joining Arsenal, according to The Athletic journalist David Ornstein.

The Red Devils do not intend to advance on anyone unless the desire is mutual, and it is safe to say they will only be going after the Sweden international should he express a willingness to join them.

Reports emerged over the weekend that Man Utd were closing in on a deal for Gyokeres ahead of the Gunners, but they have made no bid for him, and the player remains resolute in his desire to join Arsenal.

A deal for the former Brighton & Hove Albion striker to move to the North London club is believed to be close, as both clubs have a broad agreement on a fixed fee of €63.5 million with a further €10m in potential add-ons.

However, there is some wrangling over the make-up of the €10m add-ons, and Man United could keep monitoring the situation.

Their head coach Ruben Amorim remains open to reuniting with the 27-year-old after he notched 39 league goals last term, and landing such a player would be huge after signing Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.

The Red Devils also tried to enter the race for Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike last week, but the Frenchman had committed to Liverpool.

They have other striking options on their wishlist, with RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko back on their radar, while a move for Chelsea star Nicolas Jackson has also been mooted.

More names are expected to emerge in the coming weeks, and they will be keen to get a quality number 9 as Rasmus Hojlund is expected to leave after an underwhelming campaign last term.

Amorim wants to make a statement of intent next season, and adding a quality striker to his attack will send a message to other rivals as Man United look to impress across all the three domestic competitions after missing out on European football for next season.
