Red Sox Made ‘Impressive Pitch’ For Veteran Reliever
The Boston Red Sox open a three-game series on Monday night on the road against the Philadelphia Phillies.
The hosts will welcome back veteran relief pitcher David Robertson for his third stint with the club, after they signed the 40-year-old to a $16 million contract for the rest of the 2025 season on Sunday.
As it turns out, Robertson could’ve very well been entering Citizens Bank Park on Monday wearing a Red Sox uniform.
“Dave Robertson confirmed that Craig Breslow had attended his workout on Saturday, and said the Sox made an impressive pitch, but he decided to return to Philadelphia, which he described as feeling like home,” Alex Speier of the Boston Globe posted on Bluesky.
The right-hander made his big-league debut with the New York Yankees in June 2008 and spent the first seven seasons of his career with the team. Robertson helped the Yankees win their most recent World Series title in 2009 and earned his lone All-Star nod in 2011.
After playing with the Chicago White Sox in 2015, 2016 and part of the 2017 campaign, he was reacquired by New York in a July 2017 trade and spent 2018 in the Bronx. Robertson signed with the Phillies for the first time in January 2019 and was with the organization for two years, though he missed the pandemic-shortened 2020 season due to injury.
He spent 2021-24 with the Tampa Bay Rays, Chicago Cubs, Phillies (again), New York Mets, Miami Marlins and Texas Rangers.
Robertson rejoins Philadelphia with 177 saves and a career 2.91 ERA and 1.15 WHIP across 876 2/3 innings pitched covering 861 games. He went 3-4 with a 3.00 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and two saves in 72 innings (68 games) out of the Rangers bullpen in 2024.
