Celtics Linked To Ex-All-Star, No. 1 Overall Pick Amid Roster Shuffle
Boston Celtics are kicking the tires on a former All-Star looking for a second chance — but he may come at more than just the minimum price.
Celtics are one of four teams that have expressed interest in free agent Ben Simmons, according to NBA insider Marc Stein. The 29-year-old has reportedly been in recent discussions with Phoenix Suns, while the New York Knicks and Sacramento Kings have also reportedly shown interest.
Simmons is believed to be seeking more than the minimum on the open market. The Celtics currently sit just over the second apron and can only offer Simmons a veteran minimum deal right now. Unless a trade or roster cut opens up the taxpayer midlevel exception, Boston’s options remain limited.
The 2016 No. 1 overall pick played in 51 games last season, splitting time between Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Clippers. He averaged 5.0 points, 4.7 rebounds and 5.6 assists while struggling to carve out a consistent role. In the postseason, Simmons was an afterthought, logging just five appearances and less than a point per game for a Clippers team erased in the first round.
Still, it is his defensive upside and versatility that continue to draw interest. At 6-foot-10, Simmons can switch across multiple positions, operate as a secondary playmaker and provide length off the bench — all traits Celtics could use following a flurry of offseason departures and Jayson Tatum’s Achilles injury.
Boston has filled out its 15-man roster but could clear space by moving on from partially guaranteed deals for Jordan Walsh or JD Davison. They have also reportedly kept trade conversations open around newly acquired Anfernee Simons and Georges Niang.
For Simmons, Boston represents a clean slate with a title-caliber organization and minutes available.
Whether the two sides can bridge the financial gap may depend on how serious Simmons is about resetting his career in a system built for winning.
