Patriots Utilize Roster Quirk, Sign Player Before Training Camp

The New England Patriots reportedly added another player to their active roster Sunday, bringing the total to 91.

No, you’re usually not allowed to carry that many players, but the organization once again is taking advantage of a roster quirk that has become quite advantageous over the last few years.

New England is signing defensive tackle David Olajiga, according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, bringing the native of England onto the roster through the International Player Pathway — which keeps him from counting against the roster until final cuts.

Olajiga, 27, originally signed with the Los Angeles Rams as an undrafted free agent out of Central Missouri in 2024. Olajiga was then among the club’s final cuts last offseason, before signing on with the practice squad and eventually returning via a reserve/future contract — but that didn’t last very long as he was cut in May.

Olajiga has yet to appear in a game.

The Patriots have long utilized the IPP, helping turn their first participant — fullback Jakob Johnson — into a multi-year contributor. New England also spent time working with linebacker Jotham Russell, and defensive linemen Haggai Ndubuisi and Wilfried Pene — who was released earlier this offseason.
