Empoli left-back Cacace on verge of Wrexham transfer
After links with Lecce, Cremonese and Pisa, Wrexham confirm they are close to signing Empoli defender Liberato Cacace.
The 24-year-old is a New Zealand international of obvious Italian origins who has been at Empoli since leaving VV Sint-Truiden in January 2022.
His departure seemed likely after relegation to Serie B and the fact his contract only runs to June 2026.
Numerous clubs were mentioned as options for the left-back, including current top flight Italian sides Lecce, Cremonese and Pisa.
However, The Athletic report that Wrexham are on the verge of making a deal worth a club record €2.5m.
Wrexham ready to welcome Cacace
“Libby is a player we have looked at,” Wrexham coach Phil Parkinson told reporters ahead of a pre-season friendly against New Zealand’s Wellington Phoenix.
“It isn’t finalised, as of yet. But I have spoken to Libby and love his character and personality. If we can get the signing completed, he is a player who will fit in with the culture we have created at Wrexham.”
Cacace has 86 Serie A appearances under his belt, where he scored two goals and provided five assists.
As for Wrexham, the club is famous for climbing up the divisions to the Championship after seeing their experience covered extensively in a reality show.
They are also owned by Hollywood figures Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.
