Caitlin Clark Praises Celtics Before Fever-Sun Showdown In Boston

While the Boston Celtics are on summer break, their arena was sold out on Tuesday night for a different basketball game.

The Connecticut Sun hosted the Indiana Fever in a WNBA matchup at TD Garden on Tuesday. The game was held in Boston to accommodate the larger crowd, as TD Garden can hold nearly twice as many fans (19,156) as the Sun’s stadium at Mohegan Sun Arena (10,000).

Many of their fans came to see Fever All-Star Caitlin Clark, who made her first trip to Boston.

During her pregame press conference, Clark spoke about her respect and admiration for the Celtics organization despite being an Indiana Pacers fan.

“I think this is like one of the premier, if not the premier, organizations in the NBA,” Clark said. “As I’ve been growing up, they’ve been a fun team to root for. Tatum and Jaylen Brown and Derrick White, you go down the list and they’re really fun to watch.”

Clark added that she likes Boston’s offensive style of shooting lots of 3-pointers, calling it “fun” and “a great style of basketball.” That’s not surprising, given that she led the WNBA in 3-pointers made (122) and attempted (355) last year.

The two-time All-Star proceeded to lead Indiana to an 85-77 win over Connecticut in front of a sold-out crowd that included Celtics stars Jaylen Brown and Georges Niang, tallying 14 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. However, she exited the game late in the fourth quarter after appearing to re-aggravate her groin injury.

Clark has already missed nine of the Fever’s 22 games this season, so hopefully the injury isn’t too serious and she’s able to return to the court soon. Indiana will continue its road trip and look to extend its winning streak to four games on Wednesday night against the New York Liberty at Barclays Center.
