'Medical was expected' for 25yo PL star but change of stance increases pressure on Amorim
Manchester United are struggling to reach an agreement with Brentford for Bryan Mbeumo.
The Red Devils have already tabled two formal bids, both of which were swiftly rejected by the West London outfit.
United’s second proposal was worth £55 million and £7.5m in add-ons.
The Guardian have now revealed that Brentford have “changed their stance”, raising their valuation to closer to £70m.
Ratcliffe and Jason Wilcox believed a £65m package would seal the deal, and Brentford had also “privately indicated that a medical was expected imminently”.
The United duo do not wish to be held to ransom and are determined to be patient.
Mbeumo’s current contract expires next summer, but the Bees have an option to trigger a one-year extension.
With the Premier League season kicking off in just under a month, United are running out of time to strengthen their underperforming squad.
United have made just one notable addition to their ranks this summer. Matheus Cunha was signed from Wolverhampton Wanderers after the Red Devils triggered the £62.5m release clause.
After finishing a woeful 15th in the Premier League and losing the UEFA Europa League final to Tottenham, expectations for a summer rebuild were sky-high.
Many hoped that INEOS would back Amorim with signings early in the window, but that optimism is beginning to fade.
Brentford’s bullish demands have been further validated by recent transfers, with Anthony Elanga and Noni Madueke commanding fees of around £50m.
Mbeumo has outperformed the pair and appears to be entering the peak of his powers.
The 25-year-old could seamlessly slot into the right-sided number 10 role in Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 formation.
The Bees are also cognizant that United are not in talks with any alternative forward.
If Brentford does not decrease their asking price, this transfer saga could stretch into the final days of the transfer window.
