Red Sox Exec Shares Initial Comments On Boston’s First-Round Pitcher
The Boston Red Sox are thrilled about their newest arm.
Boston drafted right-hander Kyson Witherspoon 15th overall in the 2025 MLB Draft on Sunday night. Witherspoon, who was one of the top college pitchers during his First Team All-American campaign, was listed as Baseball America’s No. 7 prospect and MLB Pipeline’s No. 10 prospect ahead of the draft.
Red Sox scouting director Devin Pearson offered some insight into the organization’s feelings on Witherspoon.
“Kyson is a guy we valued highly entering the draft, and we believe he is one of the top college arms in the class,” Pearson told reporters, per MassLive’s Chris Cotillo. “We think he fits in nicely with our development strengths and has the right makeup to pitch at Fenway Park. We couldn’t be more excited to welcome him to Red Sox Nation.”

The 6-foot-2, 207-pound right-hander recorded a 2.65 ERA in 31 appearances (27 starts) during his junior season with the Oklahoma Sooners.
A former MLB executive praised the pick, expressing that Witherspoon has a higher upside than any other pitcher in the draft class.
