Man Utd are poised to sign Club World Cup star by triggering clause - report
Botafogo are looking for a potential replacement with goalkeeper John Victor anticipated to join Manchester United this summer, according to Goal Brasil.
Victor has had a superb career with the Brazilian giants. He helped them win the Copa Libertadores and Campeonato Brasileiro Série A titles last season.
He was also impressive at the recent Club World Cup, and reports claim that United are willing to pay the £5.93 million release clause in his contract this summer.
Botafogo are aware of the situation and have begun searching for a replacement. They have held positive talks with Atletico Mineiro regarding Matheus Mendes.
United could speed up Victor pursuit after Onana setback
The Red Devils recently suffered a huge setback in pre-season training. Andre Onana sustained a hamstring injury and could be on the sidelines for six to eight weeks.
His absence leaves Altay Bayindir as the only quality goalkeeper in the squad, given third-choice Tom Heaton has played just three competitive games in the last five campaigns.
Bayindir has also been unconvincing between the sticks. His distribution has come under scrutiny, and manager Ruben Amorim may want a solid competitor with Onana sidelined.
Victor would be a superb acquisition for the Mancunian giants. The 29-year-old has a save success rate of 81 percent in Serie A this term. He has completed almost 80 percent of his passes.
He was likewise good during the Club World Cup with 3.3 saves per outing. Victor kept a hard-fought clean sheet against Paris Saint-Germain, who are favourites to win the tournament.
At £5.93m, it appears a no-brainer decision to purchase the 29-year-old. He would be a risk-free investment.
Victor could be tempted to join too, with the chance to impress Amorim and secure a permanent starting berth in future.
