Celtics’ Summer League Plans For Top Draft Pick, Revealed

The Boston Celtics are set to kick off their 2025 Summer League action on July 11, and one player everyone will be keeping close tabs on is rookie guard Hugo Gonzalez, who the team selected with the No. 28 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.

A 19-year-old guard out of Spain, Gonzalez has tons of potential, but he’s still very raw. He’s played professionally for Real Madrid in the Tercera EBA since 2022, but his time on the court during that stretch has been very limited.

While some wondered whether Gonzalez would participate in the C’s Summer League campaign, he was included on the team’s initial roster, which was officially released earlier this week.

Not only is Gonzalez on the roster, but it sounds like he’s going to get quite a bit of action. According to Matt Reynolds, the Celtics’ Summer League head coach, Gonzalez is going to be busy over the next few weeks.

“Matt Reynolds said Hugo Gonzalez will play ‘a lot’ during Summer League for the Celtics,” Bobby Manning of CLNS shared in a post on X.

Gonzalez averaged 3.6 points, two rebounds, and 0.6 assists per game in 56 outings with Real Madrid. Considering how he only averaged 11.1 minutes per game, though, it’s clear that there’s room for him to grow.

Given his professional experience, plus the talent exodus Boston has endured early on this offseason, it’s not a stretch to wonder if a strong body of work during the upcoming Summer League contests could help Gonzalez carve out a role with the Celtics as a rookie.

For now, that’s still pretty far down the line. Gonzalez will look to make a positive first impression when he suits up for the Celtics in their 2025 Summer League opener against the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday at 4 p.m. ET.
