Tottenham fans all have the same message for Atletico Madrid after Cristian Romero news
Tottenham fans have taken to social media in their numbers following fresh reports suggesting that Atletico Madrid are unwilling to meet the club’s £70 million asking price for Cristian Romero.
Tottenham Hotspur are doing all they can to fend off growing interest from Atletico Madrid in their key centre-back Cristian Romero.
The Argentine international has just two years remaining on his current contract and played an instrumental role in Spurs’ Europa League success last season.
Romero won the man of the match accolade in the final of the Europa League, as well as the player of the tournament award. Still, uncertainty continues to loom over his long-term future in north London.
There is a growing belief that Romero could seek a move away, especially after publicly admitting that he would welcome the chance to play in La Liga.
Tottenham fans react as Atletico Madrid not willing to pay £70m asking price for Cristian Romero
Atletico Madrid remain the most persistent of Romero’s Spanish suitors, while Real Madrid are also said to be monitoring the situation.
Initial reports had suggested that Diego Simeone’s side was preparing an all-out bid for Romero this summer, but it has since been claimed that no formal offers have been submitted to Spurs for Cristian Romero.
A new update now indicates that Atletico Madrid are not prepared to meet Tottenham’s £70 million valuation, instead relying on Romero’s desire to join them to help lower the price, with the hope being that the player may pressure the club into softening their stance.
Tottenham fans have reacted strongly to the news, with many backing the club’s position and insisting that Romero should not leave unless the full fee is paid, while others are confident that Daniel Levy will not accept anything less than the club’s valuation.
One supporter stated: “Then he is going nowhere”, while another added: “£70 million is a bargain as it is. I hate European clubs – they think they will get everyone for free. Romero will stay and I am glad.”
Another fan said: “Trying to play us at our own game. We are doing the same with Kudus and everyone we target. Get the player to play up. Let us see if Romero returns to training. If he does not, I think we should sell, because in a World Cup year, come March next year, he is going to down tools.”
One simply wrote: “Yeah, that is not happening”, while another vented: “£82 million for Alvarez, Felix for £113 million and you are being skint on a centre-back not even in their prime who has won everything internationally and just won the Europa League. You are not big enough to play like this.”
Another added: “Why should we lower the price? He is genuinely world-class. No one lowers their price for us and he still has two years on his contract, which he should honour. We could sell him next year for what they are offering.”
That sense of optimism was echoed by another fan who concluded: “Great, we get him for another season then.”
Why Tottenham must stand firm on Cristian Romero
Of course, Tottenham Hotspur are under no pressure to part ways with Cristian Romero, so there is no reason to entertain the idea of lowering their valuation.
Romero, as previously stated, has two years remaining on his deal, and while there is a risk of losing him for free in 2027, the club may instead gamble on this season and aim to convince him to commit to fresh terms before next summer.
Daniel Levy is understood to be keen to show ambition this season, and it has been claimed that one of his top priorities is ensuring Romero remains in N17. The Spurs chairman is even believed to have offered the Argentine a new deal that would make him the club’s highest-paid player.
