Man Utd in the mix to sign "world-class" 27yo star, he can depart for £35m - report

Manchester United have had a good start to the summer transfer window.

The Red Devils have primarily focused on bolstering the forward department.

They have already signed Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers, while talks are continuing with Brentford to purchase Bryan Mbeumo.

Chelsea ace Christopher Nkunku has also been linked with United, and The Athletic claim they remain in the race despite renewed interest from Bayern.

Bayern explored a deal for the Frenchman at the start of the year. They have revived their pursuit of the versatile playmaker after missing out on Florian Wirtz.

United could sign Nkunku as part of Garnacho swap deal

Nkunku, described as ‘world-class‘ by Bundesliga.com, has had a decent second season at Chelsea. He has registered 15 goals and five assists in all competitions despite limited minutes in the league.

The former RB Leipzig man managed only 910 minutes during the recent top-flight campaign. This could pave the way for his departure during the ongoing transfer window.

Nkunku has yet to prove his credentials on a consistent basis at Chelsea. The 27-year-old has largely played out of position as a striker rather than in his preferred number 10 role.

At United, he could get more playing time from the position, considering manager Ruben Amorim has operated with two attacking midfielders in the starting line-up.

Chelsea have reduced Nkunku’s price tag to £35 million, but United could recruit him for free if the Blues press forward and sign Alejandro Garnacho this summer.

The Athletic claim that the Blues have Garnacho on their wishlist. United could be willing to sanction his sale for a small fee if Nkunku is included as a makeweight in the deal.

There is also a possibility that separate transfers could be negotiated due to the Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Nkunku remains in the prime of his career and would fit into the club’s current transfer policy of signing players who are in the peak phase and can deliver immediate results.
