Red Sox Scouting Director Prepared For ‘Deep Draft’

The 2025 Major League Baseball Draft will begin July 13, and the Boston Red Sox will try to continue their recent track record in identifying and drafting elite amateur talent.

With the Red Sox’s 26-man roster currently experiencing a youth movement, it’s hard to imagine where the team would be without the contributions of rookies and recent draft selections Marcelo Mayer and Roman Anthony.

That being said, the Red Sox traded their last two first-round draft picks, Kyle Teel (2023) and Braden Montgomery (2024), in a five-player deal with the Chicago White Sox to acquire left-handed starter Garrett Crochet. Boston was able to blow rival teams out of the water when it came to offering the best prospect return when the White Sox made Crochet available last offseason.

Turning attention to the upcoming draft, MLB.com’s Ian Brown spoke with Red Sox director of amateur scouting, Devin Pearson, about the team’s strategy on draft night and his impression of the talent level of this year’s draft class.

With the Red Sox holding the No. 15 pick in the first round, Browne asked Pearson what trends he and the scouting department are seeing between picks No. 1 and No.15.

“It seems to be college pitching-heavy at the top. And then a nice spread of all four demographics at the 10-15 range,” Pearson told Browne.

Asked about any potential pressure the organization feels on draft night this year after trading Teel and Montgomery, Pearson said the Red Sox approach each pick from an overall value perspective.

“I don’t know if it puts more pressure,” said Pearson. “I think, more than anything, it just makes our group feel stronger that whoever we select is going to carry value in multiple ways, through trades or how they play. So it’s just giving (Craig Breslow) options.”

The Red Sox have four picks on the first night of the draft — Nos. 15, 33, 75, and 87. Keith Law of The Athletic released his latest mock draft on Tuesday and has the Red Sox selecting Tennessee infielder Gavin Kilen at 15th overall.

Kilen, who played second base and shortstop for Tennessee, was named a First-Team All-American after hitting .357 with 15 home runs and 46 RBI in 53 games this season.
