This week, Notre Dame OL Charles Jagusah suffered a broken arm in a car accident; Florida State got a commitment from four star CB Chauncey Kennon; and, back to Notre Dame, the Irish landed a commitment from WR Devin Fitzgerald – the son 11-time Pro Bowler Larry Fitzgerald. Other college football stories we’re tracking include…

Heisman Watch: DJ Lagway

The Florida Gators fell upon hard times in recent years, but last season snapped a skid of three straight losing campaigns with an eight-win effort. More winning is expected this year, especially with sophomore quarterback DJ Lagway – a popular preseason Heisman Trophy pick — now firmly ensconced as the starter.

It didn’t take long last year for a QB controversy to emerge between Lagway and incumbent starter Graham Mertz, but over time, Lagway saw more and more of the snaps and by the season finale he threw a career-high 35 passes.

All told, Lagway wound up with 115 completions while flirting with 2,000 yards as a rookie. More importantly, he flashed his leadership skills as a freshman, and that’s a key attribute for him heading forward.

A former five-star recruit, this kid is about to become a household name this season. And any worries about Lagway’s shoulder (he couldn’t throw in the spring) are gone as he’s reportedly 100 per cent healthy now.

At 6’3″, 239, he’s built to survive the pro game and has both the arm and athleticism to succeed at the next level. For what it’s worth, Lagway has been compared to Jordan Love.

Can K-State Move Up in the Big 12?

Since bottoming out at 4-6 during the Covid-shortened 2020 season, the Kansas State Wildcats have been on a nice roll, racking up four straight winning seasons – appearing in a Bowl games each time (including the coveted Pop-Tarts Bowl in 2023) – while finishing in the top 25 twice, including once as a top 10 team).

It’s been good times in K-State and more of that is expected in 2025 as the Wildcats hope to build on their recent success and perhaps challenge for a spot in the CFP. Small wonder Kansas State is a 3.5 point fave as per FanDuel to win its opener next month against Iowa State.

The Wildcats have several nice receiving options for up and coming junior QB Avery Johnson, but we’re particularly expecting big things from junior tight end Garrett Oakley.

Oakley was K-State’s leading TE in 2024, racking up 236 yards receiving while hauling in five TDs, but he has a chance to take it to the next level in 2025. In fact, some project him as a a candidate for the All Big 12 second team.
