Garrett Crochet Joins Red Sox Greats With Latest Milestone

Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Garrett Crochet earned his ninth win of the season in a 6-4 victory over the Washington Nationals on Sunday. Crochet’s five-inning, seven-strikeout performance helped the Red Sox complete a three-game sweep over the Nationals and improve to 6-4 over their last ten games.

After the game, Major League Baseball announced that Crochet, along with teammates Alex Bregman and Aroldis Chapman, were named American League All-Star reserves and will travel to Atlanta for the Midsummer Classic on July 15.

Crochet also joined an elite list of legendary Red Sox pitchers when he struck out his 150th batter before the All-Star break, joining Roger Clemens, Pedro Martínez, and Chris Sale as the only pitchers in team history to accomplish the rare feat.

Speaking to reporters after the game about his second career All-Star selection, Crochet was quick to point out how different the honor feels to him the second time around with his new ball club.

“Last year, not that I didn’t feel like I deserved it, but the rules are a little bit different now where every team has got to have a rep,” said Crochet per MassLive’s Chris Cotillo. “To be one of three from our team representing the Red Sox, it’s a special feeling.”

While Crochet didn’t have his best day on the mound on Sunday, he improved his season record to 9-4 and will carry a 2.39 ERA and 1.10 WHIP into his next start. His 151 strikeouts are the most by any pitcher in MLB this season.
