Journalist reveals fresh details on Man United’s pursuit of ‘very hardworking’ 37-goal star
Manchester United are exploring the market for a new striker this summer.
The Red Devils have been linked with multiple centre-forwards, including Napoli’s Victor Osimhen.
Osimhen is set to leave the Serie A champions this summer after falling out with the club’s management.
He was on loan with Turkish outfit Galatasaray last season and scored 37 goals for them.
United have a long-standing interest in the Nigeria international, who former Swansea star Bafetimbi Gomis has described as ‘very hardworking.’
According to Turkish journalist Yagiz Sabuncuoglu, the Red Devils ‘really want’ to sign the Nigerian, but he has rejected a move to the club after he was asked to reduce his wage demand.
Galatasaray and Saudi Pro-League (SPL) side Al Hilal have made the best offer to Osimhen, while Juventus also offered an attractive deal to him.
However, the Turkish giants appear to be the favourites for his signature. They will reportedly meet with Osimhen this week to finalize a deal.
United should intensify interest in Ollie Watkins after Osimhen’s rejection
Man United have been linked with Watkins, who Aston Villa could sell to comply with the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
United’s interest in Osimhen is premised on his proven qualities as a centre-forward, having impressed in the Serie A.
Watkins has equally done the same in the Premier League, most notably in the last two campaigns.
The Villa forward provided 16 goals and eight asists in the league last season. He recorded the fifth-highest goal contributions in the division.
While he missed the most big chances in the English top flight, he still outperformed his 15.38 expected goals (xG).
Watkins’ strong hold-up play would also allow him to combine well with new signing Matheus Cunha and potentially Bryan Mbeumo.
Youngster Chido Obi, rated as one of the best teenage strikers in the country, also stands a chance of benefiting from playing with the England international based on his experience and quality.
United should attempt to complete a deal for the English forward, provided the financial terms are not exorbitant.
