Red Sox Sweep Forces Opponent To Immediately Clean House
The Boston Red Sox applied the final nail to the coffin for the Washington Nationals.
No, the latter isn’t folding or anything like that, they just completely cleaned house after being swept over the weekend on their own diamond.
The Nationals fired both general manager Mike Rizzo and manager Dave Martinez on Sunday, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. Mike DeBartolo will take over as interim general manager for the floundering franchise, who confirmed the news with a statement.
“On behalf of our family and the Washington Nationals organization, I first and foremost want to thank Mike and Davey for their contributions to our franchise and our city. Our family is eternally grateful for their years of dedication to the organization, including their roles in bringing a World Series trophy to Washington, D.C.,” managing principal owner Mark Lerner said. “While we are appreciative of their past successes, the on-field performance has not been where we or our fans expect it to be. This is a pivotal time for our club, and we believe a fresh approach and new energy is the best course of action for our team moving forward.”
Martinez was in his eighth season leading the club, having led them to their only World Series victory in 2019. Rizzo was the executive tasked with trading away Juan Soto in 2022, and surprisingly came out on the winning end as he secured two future All-Stars in James Wood and CJ Abrams.
It’s just a tough business, as the club hasn’t made a postseason appearance since their triumph.
The Nationals hold the No. 1 pick in the 2025 MLB Draft, which takes place next Sunday.
The Red Sox have been at the forefront of two huge managerial firings in the last several seasons, as they were in the midst of a series with the Los Angeles Angels when they fired Joe Madden in 2022.
