Rafael Devers Snubbed From All-Star Game After Red Sox Trade

Rafael Devers was running away with a starting All-Star Game spot three weeks ago. He’s now out of the picture entirely.

ESPN revealed the full All-Star rosters on Sunday. Devers didn’t receive his fourth career selection because of last month’s blockbuster trade.

Devers held an overwhelming lead for the American League’s starting designated hitter spot before the Boston Red Sox sent him to the San Francisco Giants. While the long-time third baseman had little competition in the AL, Shohei Ohtani blocked his starting path in the Senior Circuit.

Another star slugger prevented Devers from receiving an invite to Atlanta. Kyle Schwarber was instead named an NL reserve as the league’s second DH.

It’s a tough break for Devers, who was batting .272/.401/.504 when the Red Sox shocked the MLB world on June 15. However, his omission isn’t a stunner given the new circumstances.

Nobody will question Ohtani’s All-Star credentials, and the two-time MVP garnered more fan votes than any NL player in the opening phase. Schwarber also brandishes a better 2025 portfolio than Devers, registering 27 home runs and a .395 weighted on-base average (wOBA) for the Philadelphia Phillies to Devers’ 17 long balls and .373 wOBA.

Devers also hasn’t accomplished much yet as an NL member. The 28-year-old is still settling into his new home, batting .221/.325/.382 with two home runs in 18 games with the Giants entering Sunday night’s matchup against the Athletics.

The NL bench didn’t have room for two players who haven’t needed their gloves all year. After all, Trea Turner and Juan Soto also missed the cut.

Ryan O’Hearn capitalized on the Devers’ deal to win the AL’s starting seat at DH. Brent Rooker, listed on the fan ballot at outfield despite spending most of his time at DH, landed a reserve designation with 18 home runs and an .839 OPS.
