How Red Sox Veteran Gave Romy Gonzalez Edge Vs Lefties
Right-handed hitter Romy Gonzalez has thrived against left-handed pitchers this season with the help of Red Sox veteran Rob Refsnyder.
In Boston’s 10-3 win over the Washington Nationals on Saturday, Gonzalez showed just how dominant he is against lefties. He went 3-for-5 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs against lefty Mitchell Parker.
After the win, the 28-year-old told reporters that Refsnyder has helped him hit against lefties this season.
“I feel really locked in,” Gonzalez said, according to MassLive’s Chris Cotillo. “I’m constantly working, obviously, on my lefty approach. A lot of help from the hitting coaches and Rob keeping me locked in. It feels great.”
In 38 games played, Gonzalez is batting .317 with a .354 OBP, totaling 23 RBIs. In 27 games against lefties, he has hit .379 with three homers, seven doubles, one triple, 14 RBIs and a 1.136 OPS, according to Cotillo.
Due to Triston Casas’ season-ending injury, Gonzalez has filled in at first base. With playing more, Gonzalez has put in a lot of work with Refsnyder that has paid off.
“It doesn’t surprise me at all,” Gonzalez said about his success. “I think it’s just a testament to the work we put in with the hitting guys. Rob’s a great hitter. He has been doing this for a long time and he has passed down a lot of knowledge to me.”
