Stefon Diggs Trade? Top Patriots Insider Still ‘Not Ruling It Out’

With the early summer boat drama in the rearview mirror, could a Stefon Diggs trade still happen?

It’s hard to see it, as Diggs seemingly was a good soldier at New England Patriots minicamp and projects as quarterback Drake Maye’s top target. And all signs point toward Diggs being ready to start the season on schedule despite suffering a torn ACL last season.

But what if Diggs still hasn’t won over his new bosses? What if the Patriots receive an offer they can’t refuse?

In a story published Wednesday, Boston Sports Journal’s Greg Bedard mused on a potential Diggs trade while predicting which receivers will earn roster spots.

“Diggs, (Mack) Hollins and (Kyle) Williams are the stone-cold locks,” Bedward wrote. “I am, however, not guaranteeing that Diggs is on this roster, although I would put it at about 95 percent. My only allowance: the team isn’t thrilled with Diggs, for whatever reason, a legit No. 1 becomes available, and Diggs goes out in a trade for the new No. 1 WR. Long shot, but I’m not totally ruling it out.

“Bourne and Douglas are the near-locks. I think the team would listen to trade offers on Bourne, Douglas, Polk, Boutte and Baker (good luck). I’m giving Polk another year to prove himself, but that could end quickly and he could be traded.”\

Bedard also predicted undrafted rookie receiver Efton Chism III to earn a roster spot after impressing throughout spring practices.

“Chism makes the team, but we still need to see him in pads,” Bedard wrote. “If his film is good in the preseason, they might not be able to get him to the practice squad. And he might like someone else’s p-squad offer, like from a West Coast team (hometown Seahawks, Rams, Chargers, 49ers etc).”

Ultimately, a Diggs trade feels unlikely for all the aforementioned reasons. But we’re talking about a 31-year-old diva receiver coming off a torn ACL; all options should be on the table.
