QPR (4) – Brentford (1) -’Hearty Cheers were given for the Donors of the Trophy & for the Winners’
Ealing Hospital Cup
Team: Shaw, MacDonald, Fidler, Butterworth, Mitchell, Wake, Whyman, Revill, McKie, Browning, Barnes
On 8th November 1911, Rangers took on Brentford at Park Royal in an Ealing Hospital Cup match. The following report appeared in the Middlesex County Times a few days later:
‘About a thousand spectators witnessed the Ealing Hospital Cup match between Queen’s Park Rangers and Brentford on Wednesday afternoon at Park Royal.
His worship, the Mayor of Ealing (Councillor J. Roose Francis J.P.), who was accompanied by Mrs Roose Francis, performed his last mayoral act by kicking off.
During the first-half, the Rangers had the better of the exchanges. Revill gave a polished display and scored the opening goal of the match.
After Whyman and McKie had each tested Bruton, Revill scored again, the keeper falling in trying to save.
In the second-half the Rangers again had the better of matters, their defence holding out well against some rather spasmodic attacks, while their forwards were invariably dangerous.
After Barnes had made a fine opening for McKie, the latter got the ball past Bruton, who only partially stopped it.
Before the end, Revill scored the fourth goal, but again Bruton was at fault.
The game ended in a win for the Rangers, 4-1.
At the conclusion, Mrs Roose Francis presented the cup and medals to the successful team, and afterwards Mr Hart, on behalf of the Rangers warmly thanked the Mayor for his generosity in providing the trophy in so deservedly a cause as the Ealing Hospital.
Mr Duck (Brentford) seconded the resolution of thanks, which was carried with enthusiastic cheering.
In response, Councillor Roose Francis said it had been a source of great pleasure to the Mayoress and himself to witness the game that afternoon, particularly so, as it was one of the last duties they had to perform as Mayor and Mayoress of Ealing.
Hearty cheers were given for the donors of the trophy, and for the winners.’
In the away side that day was Middlesex and England Test cricketer, Patsy Hendren, who also spent some time playing for the Rangers reserves.
