Everton eye move for Nicolas Tagliafico on free transfer

0 26

Everton have reportedly stepped up their interest in signing experienced Argentine left-back Nicolás Tagliafico on a free transfer this summer, according to Spanish outlet Orgullo Biri.

Tagliafico’s Winning Pedigree

The 31-year-old boasts an impressive CV. He rose to prominence with Banfield in Argentina before enjoying a trophy-laden stint at Ajax between 2018 and 2022. During his time in Amsterdam, Tagliafico won three Eredivisie titles and two KNVB Cups, establishing himself as one of Europe’s most consistent left-backs.

On the international stage, the defender is equally decorated—having lifted the Copa America and playing a key role in Argentina’s 2022 World Cup triumph in Qatar.

Proven Performer with Lyon

Last season, Tagliafico made 33 appearances for Lyon, contributing eight goal involvements from the back. His form in Ligue 1 and the Europa League underlined his enduring quality, catching the attention of several clubs.

Everton now face competition from Sevilla, AS Roma, and Atletico Madrid in the race for his signature. However, with his short-term contract at Lyon expiring last winter, the Toffees could land the seasoned defender on a free transfer—a move that would represent shrewd business.

Reinforcement in a Key Area

Everton’s need for a new left-back is clear. Vitaliy Mykolenko remains the club’s only natural option in the position following Ashley Young’s departure. While Séamus Coleman, Nathan Patterson, and Jake O’Brien cover the right flank, the lack of depth on the left has raised concerns ahead of the 2025/26 season.

Bringing in a player of Tagliafico’s calibre would not only add quality but also provide leadership and experience to David Moyes’ backline. Known for his tenacity, intelligence, and deadly set-piece delivery, he could prove to be one of the bargains of the summer.
