Red Sox Leader Makes Emphatic Statement Before Trade Deadline

The Boston Red Sox have roughly one month to show whether or not they’re worthy of being buyers at the 2025 MLB Trade Deadline.

It’s not looking so hot right about now, but they might be given a fair bit of leniency.

Red Sox president Sam Kennedy discussed the organization’s potential approach prior to Wednesday night’s series-ending loss to the Cincinnati Reds, and stated they were full steam ahead despite sitting two games below .500.

“Definitely! Definitely,” Kennedy told NESN’s Tom Caron, responding to a question that asked whether he thought they’d be buyers. “I mean, we were incredibly aggressive this offseason, adding Alex Bregman and Garrett Crochet and Aroldis Chapman. The (Carlos) Narváez trade will go down as one of the best trades in recent memory. We added Walker Buehler, who we think can right the ship here, and has been totally accountable.

“We had a very aggressive offseason, rooted in a desire to marry up some new talent with our homegrown talent. We are not where we want to be as we sit here on July 2, but we can still get there. The good news is that there’s still time, but we feel an urgency, and I know everybody in that clubhouse does, as well.”

It’s easy to say something, but doing it is something entirely different.

The Red Sox looked about as sloppy as they have all season in the hours following that comment, committing two errors and running into an out on the bases that would have led to the game-tying run.

Boston’s executives say they want to buy, but it’s still up to the players to prove themselves worthy.
