Amorim's dream of signing phenomenal striker fades after €70m warning from club chief
Manchester United are looking to bolster their attack by signing a new marquee striker this summer.
They earmarked Liam Delap as their main target but he chose to join Chelsea.
Viktor Gyokeres has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford but his preferred destination is Arsenal.
Sporting Lisbon President Frederico Varandas has made it clear that Gyokeres will not be allowed to leave at a discounted price.
He recently said to the media (via Sporting CP Adeptos): “I can say that Viktor won’t leave for €60+10 million. He won’t leave, absolutely not. In recent weeks, we’ve been paying attention can say that Viktor won’t leave for €60+10 million. He won’t leave, absolutely not. In recent weeks, we’ve been paying attention.
“I saw a player, Zubimendi, who is six months younger than Viktor, go for €65 million, and I saw Matheus Cunha go to United for around €75 million.
” I believe that Viktor could leave, unless he has the worst agent in the world, which I don’t believe, as he’s one of the best in the world.”
Gyokeres’ transfer saga could stretch until the end
United head coach Ruben Amorim transformed Gyokeres into a lethal striker during his spell at Sporting.
The 26-year-old could be reunited with Amorim at Old Trafford but Arsenal are currently leading this transfer race.
The Gunners offer UEFA Champions League football and a squad capable of mounting a serious Premier League title challenge.
United, in contrast, will aim to finish in the top four next season and will not be part of any European competition.
Frederico Varandas has revealed that Sporting have no intention of accepting a bid in the region of €70m.
Any club interested in signing Gyokeres may have to bid around €80m to get Sporting’s permission to sign their star forward.
United have already snapped up Matheus Cunha and are edging closer to signing Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford.
It is highly unlikely that they will be able to afford to meet Sporting’s demand for Gyokeres.
The Red Devils must explore other options in the transfer market rather than waiting until the end of the transfer window to sign Gyokeres.
