Real Betis look to replace Johnny Cardoso with another £17m Tottenham target
Real Betis have now lined up a move for a £17m Tottenham target as Johnny Cardoso nears a transfer to fellow La Liga side, Atletico Madrid.
Given the £25 million clause Tottenham had for Johnny Cardoso, many would have expected the American international to have sealed a move to Spurs by now.
However, that is not the case, as reports from Fabrizio Romano state that Cardoso is edging closer to a move to Atletico Madrid.
The 24-year-old midfielder impressed last season with top performances against Real Madrid and even Chelsea in the Conference League final, displays that led some Tottenham fans to demand that Spurs sign Cardoso.
Real Betis want Tottenham target Morten Frendrup as Cardoso replacement
With the American international set to depart Real Betis, new reports now state that the Spanish outfit has earmarked one of Tottenham’s targets as a potential replacement for Cardoso.
This report comes from Fabrizio Romano, who claims that Real Betis have included Genoa midfielder Morten Frendrup in their four-player shortlist to replace Johnny Cardoso.
Spurs Web revealed a few days ago that Frendrup, 24, is one of the players Tottenham are also said to be monitoring as they look to reinforce their midfield this summer.
The midfielder, capable of playing in a host of positions including as a full-back, is a name that has been thrown into the mix as a player the Lilywhites could sign this summer, alongside Amadou Onana and Morten Hjulmand.
Romano, though, ends his report by stating that a deal will not be easy for Real Betis. This is because of the player’s price, Genoa’s unwillingness to sell the midfielder, and many clubs being keen on his signature.
His tweet reads: “Understand Real Betis have included Genoa midfielder Morten Frendrup in the four-player shortlist to replace Johnny Cardoso. Not an easy deal with important price and many clubs keen, as Genoa hope to keep Frendrup.”
Frendrup’s profile fits exactly what Spurs need
Tottenham Hotspur are yet to make any big signings that would move the eye of the needle this summer, as the club continues to monitor and admire targets.
With a new manager at the helm, it is important for Spurs to get their transfer dealings done swiftly so Thomas Frank can have enough time to work with his squad before the start of the new season.
Tottenham left it late in the winter window, and a repeat of such could leave them in an uncomfortable situation next season, as late signings might need time to adapt to the team and manager’s play style.
Morten’s age, versatility and experience, having played over 200 games in his career, make him a really solid option for Tottenham and with a £17 million price tag being floated around as Genoa’s asking price, it feels like a deal Spurs should be looking to complete.
