Leeds United eye move for Tottenham defender despite contract extension
Leeds United are looking to raid Tottenham this summer, with Ben Davies emerging as a potential surprise target despite only just signing a contract extension.
Leeds United are back in the English top flight following their 100-point title win in the Championship, a feat that helped them secure automatic promotion to the Premier League.
Daniel Farke’s side will be hoping to avoid the fate of the last promoted sides, who were all relegated last season after coming back up from England’s second division.
Of course, signing the right players would increase Leeds United’s chances, and they have now identified one Tottenham player as an option.
Leeds eye Tottenham defender Ben Davies after new contract
This report comes from journalist Alasdair Gold, who believes that Leeds United have been eyeing a move for Tottenham defender Ben Davies.
The Welshman is a player with experience in the Premier League, having spent 11 seasons in the English top flight, making 313 Premier League appearances in the process.
Davies only just signed a one-year contract extension with Tottenham, after the Lilywhites triggered the one-year clause in the Wales international’s current agreement, as he looked set to leave as a free agent later this month.
Gold believes that despite the extension, Davies could still be sold by Tottenham this transfer window.
Gold told Gold & Guest Talk Tottenham: “There may still maybe another departure. Ben Davies has had the extra year taken up on his contract, but I am not entirely sure that guarantees he stays.
“I think that is just the club protecting itself, there are the likes of Leeds who have been looking at him. Maybe the fact that Takai can play on the left of a centre back pairing kind of frees him to head off if a good move comes in.”
Spurs could benefit from Ben Davies exit
Of course, it would not be a bad piece of business if Tottenham decided to cash in on the veteran defender this summer.
At present, Tottenham are stacked in defence, with seven centre-backs to pick from, following the return of a few of their loan players and the signing of Takai.
Should Davies, 32, leave this summer, it could mean that Tottenham would give more gametime to one of their younger centre-backs, perhaps Vuskovic or Takai, experience that would prove invaluable in the long run.
