Don Sweeney Details Bruins’ Plans With No. 7 Pick In 2025 NHL Draft
Having a top-10 pick in the draft allows the Bruins to explore many options with the selection.
Boston could stay at No. 7, trade the pick away for a current NHL player or they could choose to move up or down on the draft board. General manager Don Sweeney isn’t shutting the door on any ideas.
“It would require a lot for us to move off of seven,” Sweeney told NESN’s Sophia Jurksztowicz on Wednesday. “There’s some opportunities to move back that we would consider…We’ve obviously had discussions with some teams that are trying to be aggressive to move up, and we look at it as if we can get a similar player in how far back that is, plus another player, we have to be considering these things.”
At No. 7, the Bruins have a chance at drafting top talent. Reportedly, Boston is high on Boston College forward James Hagens, among other forwards that are at the top of the draft boards.
Wherever the Bruins decide to draft, they will have patience with the young player and will not rush his development.
“I think we have to have an eye towards the best player who, when, if he gets to the National Hockey League, you don’t want the if,” Sweeney said. “That’s the case when you’re picking in the top part of the draft. You have to realize you have to take a player that you forecast to having an impact, to have an ability to impact the NHL lineup. That doesn’t mean year one, sometimes it’s not even year two.”
Boston is taking their time with the pick from last year, Dean Letourneau, as he returns for his second year with BC.
The 2025 NHL Draft is set to kick off on Friday at 7 p.m. ET at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles.
