Ex-Man United prospect who played with Garnacho & Mainoo joins new club

Defender Sam Murray is one of the youngsters released by Manchester United after his contract with the club expired.

Murray joined United as a U15 player from Huddersfield Town in 2021 when the Terriers closed their academy.

He featured prominently for the U18s during their 2022 FA Cup triumph, alongside forward Alejandro Garnacho and midfielder Kobbie Mainoo. He described the triumph as ‘a mad experience’.

Murray did not debut for the first team but played for them during the last pre-season games.

The left-back was a regular for the U21s last term, making 12 appearances in the Premier League 2.

His only goal of the campaign came in the 4-1 win over West Ham United in the play-off.

United have now confirmed that Murray has joined League Two outfit Carlisle United.

He has revealed that the decision to join Carlisle was influenced by Man United legend Mark Hughes, the club’s manager.

“I’m excited, delighted to be here, really,” He told CUTV.

“I know it’s a great opportunity and I spoke to Mark Hughes last week, spoke to Marc Tierney and heard about the project that they’ve got here and what they want to achieve over the next two years, it was something that I wanted to be a part of.”

The former England U15 full-back has previously played at Brunton Park, Carlisle’s stadium.

He came on as a substitute for Man United U21s in their 2-1 win over the Cumbrians on their patch in the EFL Trophy in 2022.

Murray believes joining Carlisle is ‘a step in the right direction’ after being unable to break into United’s first team.

He could debut for his new club in the pre-season friendly against Scottish side Motherwell at Fir Park on July 8.
