Ex-Red Sox 2018 World Champion Plotting MLB Return
When the Boston Red Sox recently traded Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants, they also dealt away the team’s last remaining player from the 2018 World Series Championship team.
With Devers now a Giant, and Mookie Betts, Xander Bogaerts, and Chris Sale all wearing different uniforms, Red Sox manager Alex Cora has become the last connection to one of the greatest teams in franchise history.
While that team had plenty of memorable characters, very few were as animated or outspoken on and off the field as pitcher Joe Kelly. Most recently a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers during the 2024 season, Kelly was a guest on Foul Territory and spoke about his plans to pitch again if his shoulder remains healthy.
“It was one of those things where I didn’t know if I’d be able to throw a ball that well without surgery,” said Kelly.” And so far, it’s been amazing. Strength is there, and movement is there. Obviously, the first one and the first couple of ones had zero velocity. I mean, velocity is exactly where I thought it would be right now after the first time getting on the mound. Especially, you know, it’s not like I’ve been grinding my butt off in the weight room either”
If Kelly decides to pitch this season, he’s only willing to sign with one team.
“I’ve made it known, which people would say is bad marketing, but I could give a crap. If I come back healthy, I’m only playing for one team and that’s the Dodgers,” responded Kelly.
While that’s certainly disappointing news for Red Sox fans hoping to see Kelly make a return to Fenway Park’s bullpen, his legacy remains intact after helping the Red Sox win the organization’s fourth World Series title since 2004.
