Drake Maye Takes Hilarious Jab At Josh McDaniels In New Clip
The New England Patriots underwent a lot of changes this offseason in an effort to make life easier for second-year quarterback Drake Maye. Perhaps one of the most important changes came on the coaching staff, with Josh McDaniels being brought back to town to be the Patriots new offensive coordinator.
While New England’s offense was not particularly good in 2024, Maye showed promise under Alex Van Pelt, who worked as the offensive coordinator on former head coach Jerod Mayo’s staff. With Mike Vrabel taking over as the team’s head coach, he opted to bring McDaniels along for the ride.
Easily the most important piece of McDaniels’ job will be working with Maye on his development. This is something he previously excelled in doing with Mac Jones back in 2021 when he was a rookie, as Jones regressed dramatically after McDaniels took the Las Vegas Raiders head coaching gig.
Now, he will be tasked with helping Maye take the next step forward, and how the pair work together will play a big role in their success. In a new clip from the Patriots mandatory minicamp, Maye took a hilarious jab at McDaniels for the way he was wearing his headset on the sidelines.
“He keeps that mic on his nose, I can’t hear him,” Maye said. “Look where the mic’s at on his face. The mic’s at his eye on his face.”
These are the sorts of small things that Maye and McDaniels will be looking to iron out before the start of their first regular season together. With McDaniels wearing his headset in an odd manner, it was making it difficult for Maye to hear the plays he was calling.
In 13 games as a rookie, Maye threw for 2,276 yards and 15 touchdowns, while also rushing for 421 yards and another pair of scores. With the talent level around him on offense being drastically increased, he should be set to take a step forward in 2025.
Of course, it would certainly help if he and McDaniels are seeing eye-to-eye on how things are run on offense. Thankfully, it looks like they are already building a strong relationship, which should help them both drastically once the new campaign gets underway.
