Pedro Martinez Criticizes David Ortiz For Rafael Devers Saga

The Boston Red Sox pulled off one of the most divisive trades in MLB history when they sent Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants on Sunday night. There’s plenty of blame to go around when it comes to the circumstances that led to this deal being made, but Pedro Martinez surprisingly called out David Ortiz when discussing the trade.

By now, it’s clear that Devers’ relationship with the Red Sox’s front office was frayed, which is why they opted to move on from him in the midst of their best stretch of the season. Devers was not happy with the lack of communication from the team when it came to what position he would play.

Both parties are in the wrong; Devers could have helped the team, and Boston’s front office could have done a better job communicating their expectations to their star player. Martinez, though, opted to take aim at Ortiz with some head-turning recent comments.

Martinez previously claimed that he thinks he could have played peacemaker between Devers and the Red Sox. In the wake of the deal, Ortiz has bashed Devers for his handling of the situation, but Martinez doesn’t think that was the right move, and he let his former teammate know that.

“Big Papi also made a mistake in spring training by speaking in front of the cameras about some of the things that he needed to tell Devers,” Martinez said on “B/R Walk-Off.” “That should’ve been handled in-house. Big Papi should’ve gone out with Devers to talk about those things … because the cameras are able to pick up everything that we say.”

“The other thing is, I don’t like to hear those comments after things happen like that. I would’ve loved for Big Papi to come over, grab Devers, go to a restaurant, go to his house, throw a barbecue, and talk to Devers in his house.”

Again, there’s a lot of blame to go around when it comes to this whole situation. Martinez has opted to take a more level-headed approach when it comes to the Devers trade, and he believes Ortiz should have done the same, rather than attacking the Giants’ new star designated hitter in the wake of the move.

In due time, everyone will move past this deal, but for now, it’s all anyone can talk about. The Red Sox, in the meantime, are looking to keep on winning on the field. Boston currently holds a 3-1 lead over the Seattle Mariners as they attempt to win their fourth straight series.
