Giants Manager Bob Melvin Reveals His Plan For Rafael Devers’ Position
Rafael Devers has landed in San Francisco and spoke with reporters at his introductory conference with the Giants on Tuesday.
There was a lot of drama this season surrounding Devers’ position with the Red Sox, specifically when the team moved him from third base to designated hitter after they signed Alex Bregman.
So, would he be willing to be the designated hitter for the Giants?
“They’re the men in charge,” Devers told the media. “I’m here to play wherever they want me to play.”
And with that, Giants manager Bob Melvin revealed that the plan “is a little bit of DH and a little bit of first,” for Devers.
Seeing Devers at first base will also be interesting, especially because he refused to play that position for the Red Sox after Triston Casas’ season-ending injury. And the Red Sox will be facing Devers shortly, with a three-game series set to begin on Friday.
Devers was acquired by the Giants in a blockbuster trade, with San Francisco agreeing to take on his entire contract, which is roughly $250 million across 8 1/2 years. In return, Boston got left-handed pitch Kyle Harrison, right-handed pitcher Jordan Hicks, outfielder James Tibbs, and right-handed pitcher Joes Bello.
He also opened his press conference by thanking the Red Sox.
“I just want to thank the Boston Red Sox organization for signing me at 16 and giving me an opportunity to become a big leaguer,” Devers said. “I’m happy to be here with the San Francisco Giants, and obviously happy to represent Latin America.”
