Tottenham legend Gareth Bale could make a return to British football in a surprising way

0 38

Gareth Bale is in talks to front a US private equity group in their bid to buy Plymouth Argyle – a move that could see the former Tottenham star return to football in a surprising new role.

Gareth Bale is a Tottenham legend, thanks to his heroics on the football pitch, something that made him not just an icon in north London but a global football star.

Of course, the Welsh international did not just impress at the famous White Hart Lane, but also made a name for himself at the Santiago Bernabeu, where he joined as a Galactico and won multiple titles, including five Champions League trophies.

The 35-year-old has since retired from football altogether, but before leaving the beautiful game behind, his off-field antics – particularly his well-documented love for golf – caught the attention of many, including the Spanish media, who were not best pleased.

Gareth Bale linked with Plymouth Argyle takeover bid

While the Tottenham legend followed his golf passion after retiring from football, he has still remained very much involved in footballing activities.

In fact, during Tottenham’s Europa League final, Bale appeared as a pundit on TNT Sports, where the Spurs icon took aim at Manchester United, branding them ‘United-y’ following their defeat to Spurs in the final.

New reports from the Telegraph now state that the former winger’s ventures off the pitch are not slowing down, as Gareth Bale has been lined up to front a US-based private equity group’s potential takeover at Plymouth Argyle.

Bale has no existing ties to Argyle in any way, which makes the suggestion of him becoming a co-owner at the club a rather curious development.

Plymouth relegation and Gareth Bale’s surprise involvement

However, while it may seem unexpected on the surface, it is worth noting that US-based investment groups have increasingly sought to partner with well-known figures in recent years, using their status to add a touch of glamour to club acquisitions outside the Premier League.

A similar takeover of such was done with Luka Modric, who is also a co-owner at Swansea. Plymouth Argyle, though, were relegated from the Championship last season after finishing 23rd in the table.

However, their famous FA Cup triumph over Liverpool in the 4th round still lingers fondly in the memories of their supporters.

It is understood that Argyle chairman Simon Hallett has been exploring fresh investment opportunities for over a year now, which helps make sense of Bale’s potential involvement in the club’s future.
