Red Sox Reportedly ‘Intend To Buy’ After Rafael Devers Trade
The Boston Red Sox might have traded away Rafael Devers on Sunday, but that doesn’t mean they’re going to keep selling.
MassLive’s Chris Cotillo is hearing quite the opposite.
Cotillo, citing a high-ranking member of the organization, reported that there’s no plan to continue selling heading into the trade deadline. Boston wants to add, and could potentially use the money it saved from dealing the face of the franchise to add a future cornerstone piece:
The Devers deal opens the door for a major trade deadline addition of a controllable, high-dollar player and a high-ranking source indicated Sunday that the Red Sox, at 37-36 after a big weekend sweep of the Yankees, still wholeheartedly intend to buy at the trade deadline and shop aggressively. That, obviously, could change with a bad few weeks in the wake of the Devers move. For now, though, the club’s eyes are on additions.
It’s got a lot of caveats, sure, but that has to help fans feel at least a bit better…
The Red Sox won’t soon get out from under the dark cloud that was cast with trading Devers, but immediately finding a high-level replacement for him would go a long way in the eyes of their fanbase. Boston just has to keep winning games without its best player in order to keep that chance alive.
