Staff update – Ross Banks

0 1

ROSS BANKS has been appointed as Head of Sports Science at Queen’s Park FC.

A familiar face at the Lochinch Training Complex, Ross has been on board with the Spiders since last summer.

He initially joined the Spiders as a sports scientist with the Academy, before being promoted to Head of Academy Sport Science last August.

Ross will be based at Lochinch

Within that role he worked closely with head-coach Sean Crighton on the Queen’s Park B team.

Now he will oversee the department for the first team and has been down to work quickly already, structuring programmes for the players’ return to pre-season.

Ross said: “The past few days with the players coming back have been quite exciting. We hit the ground running with the boys.

“They were tested straight away, with a double session on Friday which is part of the plan for what Sean wants as a head-coach – an attacking, intense team.

“My aim will be over the season ensure they are available to play that way, make them as robust as possible so he has as many players he can choose from.

“I worked with Sean last season and we had success in the B team. He had a coaching role with Charley (King) in the 18s and achieved top six success with them as well so I got to know all the boys and a majority have moved into the first team squad as well.”

He added: “The players have seemed fine so far. After the conditioning tests they’ve been pretty tired – but that’s to be expected after giving max effort and we’ve been pleased with them.

“There’s a lot of conditioning work still to go, a long way to go to get the players as fit and firing as much as we can but I am enjoying the challenge.

We want to be more robust and physical as well to suit the playing style and there’s a lot of work being put in.

“There’s a long way to go through pre-season before our first match and then another spell before our first competitive match against The Spartans on July 12.”

Head-coach Sean Crighton added: “I’m delighted that Ross will be head of sport science.

“He’s someone I trust and we have had some success with the B team. One thing we were last season was we were fit and Ross was key.

“He’s young, pro-active and wants to learn. Jim [Duffy] has been really impressed by him since he came in so it’s a great opportunity for him.

“He is another example of the continuity I’m looking for – in terms of certain players, certain staff members – it’s important. He’s well liked around the place, well respected and that’s important for me.

“I’m delighted he’s been appointed.”

Opportunities are also available for internships within the sports science department at the club.

Ross added: “Intern opportunities will help me in my duties but also allow successful interns to see the work up close and gain learning experience to prove themselves as a sports scientist in an applied setting.”
