Two time La Liga-winning manager openly admits he wants to sign Tottenham star

0 51

Tottenham Hotspur will not like what Diego Simeone has just said, with the Atletico Madrid boss deciding to go public with his admiration for Cristian Romero.

It has been an open secret that Atletico Madrid are keen to land Romero this summer, with the centre-back now having just two years left on his Tottenham contract.

However, the Lilywhites are not seemingly prepared to let their vice-captain go without a fight and are taking steps to tie down his future.

It has been widely reported that Tottenham have not given up hope of tying Romero to a new contract, even though the Argentine wants to move to the Spanish capital.

Diego Simeone wants to take Cristian Romero from Tottenham

Tottenham’s chances of hanging onto the centre-back received a blow a few days ago when Romero praised Ange Postecoglou immediately after Thomas Frank’s appointment.

Many Spurs fans saw that as evidence that Romero wanted out of the club, and now Simeone has added fuel to the fire by going public with his desire to sign the 27-year-old.

The Atletico Madrid boss said in his latest press conference about the Tottenham star (via Ole): “Do I want Cristian Romero? Obviously! He’s a great player.”

Daniel Levy will not take kindly to Atletico Madrid’s tactics

It is not a coincidence that Simeone’s admission comes days after Romero’s cryptic post. This is a coordinated campaign to force Tottenham’s hand to sell.

It was previously reported that Spurs would demand £60m for Romero while Atletico were only willing to pay £40m.

If anything, this approach from the centre-back and Atletico will only lead to Daniel Levy increasing his demands and making the negotiations even harder for the La Liga side.
