Giants Fawn Over Rafael Devers After Acquisition From Red Sox
San Francisco Giants designated hitter Rafael Devers is entering an organization where he’ll be greatly appreciated.
It’s the little things, you know?
Devers, as you almost certainly know by now, was the focal point of a shocking blockbuster trade on Sunday. The Boston Red Sox cut ties with their disgruntled superstar after months of discussion over what position he would play and what his long-term fit was within the organization.
It’s as shocking and hard-to-understand a move as we’ve seen in recent memory, even with the context we just laid out, but one thing that can be easily understood is how excited his new team is to have him.
“(Devers’) bat is so special. It’s really hard to acquire this type of talent at this point of his career,” Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey said on Sunday, per Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area.”It felt like this was a chance to take a shot.”
The Giants have a major need for a power bat in their lineup, with just one healthy position players in possession of an OPS over .800 (Heliot Ramos) and no single player in their organization’s ranks to hit 30 home runs in a single season since Barry Bonds in 2004.
It’ll certainly be nice to have Devers… which is something folks around these parts already knew.
